We recently spent six months travelling through South America, and in Uyuni, Bolivia we had one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. We booked on a 3 day expedition which took us out to the famous Uyuni salt flats, and then on to several coloured lakes, a cactus-covered oasis, hot springs high up at 5000m and past several volcanos...We did all of this in a Toyota Landcruiser - a true legend in that region.

When we returned to South Africa, and our base in Cape Town, we had to decide what to do over the summer months before we set off on another trip abroad. After much discussion we decided to put our combined experience of travelling to over 45 countries to use, and start a tour company, aimed specifically at travellers with an interest in photographing the amazing locations in and around Cape Town and the Western Cape province. As travel bloggers and photographers ourselves, we have a very clear understanding of what people would enjoy experiencing. I have shot fashion in this part of the world for most of my life, so I already know where to take fellow photographers and travel bloggers...

In order to run a travel company we have to obtain a qualification as tour guides, and register with the tour guide association, which we can do in January 2020, and launch Nomads Tours in February 2020. So in the meantime we sourced two iconic 4x4 vehicles and kitted them out for camping with roof racks fitted with rooftop tents, fridge-freezers run off dual battery systems, drawer systems and raised suspensions. Our first choices were a Toyota Landcruiser virtually identical to the vehicle we did the Uyuni tour in, and a mother local favourite, a Mitsubishi Pajero. Both are legendary in Southern Africa. Our plan is to add a Nissan Patrol and Toyota Hilux to the fleet down the line. As from 1 December 2019 we will launch Nomads Campers, offering these campers for self-drive trips around the Western Cape. The same vehicles will be used for our tours once we launch in two months.

So now local and foreign adventurers like us will get the opportunity to 'Drive a Legend' and go out to explore the Cederberg, the West Coast and the Garden Route in a vehicle that few people could ever afford to buy for personal use. The campers can comfortably transport up to 5 people including the driver, and we have additional pop-up tents which can be hired if a family is renting a vehicle. It's an opportunity for ordinary people who typically drive a small to medium size hatchback or sedan to experience what it's like to take a road trip or camping holiday in an iconic 4x4 - at a daily hire cost of R 750 - R 850 depending on days booked.
